Charles Macadam – Business Coach, Mentor and Troubleshooter
1990 to current
Charles was responsible for starting the Franklin Covey operation in the UK in 1990 having been head-hunted for the position by an intermediary. From a start up situation of 4 people the company (without a UK oriented product for the first 2 years)) quickly moved into such companies as Lloyds Bank, National Westminster Bank, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Vauxhall Motors, Rolls Royce,  BBC, and other blue chip organisations. This was achieved despite being at the start and through the deep recession of the early ‘90’s.
After 7 yrs as managing Director and having taken the company to an annual t/o of $7.5m and 53 people he was then given the opportunity of joining the International division and was made Managing Director for product procurement. This entailed setting up 5 Print manufacturing centres around the world (Singapore, Hong Kong, Holland, Mexico and Canada) to enable the Franklin Day Planner to be printed in areas closer to the Franklin direct offices and their major Licensees rather than shipping from the HQ in Utah, USA. Not only did this create a faster supply chain but it also increased Cost of Sales margins by some 23%. He also created a group of Leather Binder manufacturers which were able to produce a higher quality product than the one produced in the USA but at approximately 30% of the unit price. This, together with the printing savings enabled Franklin Covey to gain an extra  $5.8m to the bottom line over a 21 month period.
From International he was then asked to correct an Operational problem in Australia and ended up running Australia and New Zealand for 2 years. The AUD$ 1.4m loss was turned around to a AUD$500K net profit in 18 months. After this role he was asked to take over the Vice President’s position in HQ being responsible for the creation of Annual Day Planners (24 different styles in 4 start dates) as well as the accessories range.
After 4 years he returned to the UK and has been an Interim Manager taking on a wide variety of assignments but all of these roles leveraged the experience gained from his time at Franklin Covey as well as the business management positions held in the previous 35 years.
A strong and consistent work ethic is the cornerstone of his business style as well as an ability to work successfully in multi-cultural business environments.
